Why is HD 1080p? | Nostalgia Nerd
Support the channel at www.patreon.com/nostalgianerd / Grab my book (affiliate) nnerd.me/GadgetsGizmos ~ Screen resolutions have changed a lot over the years. We started out with a set number of horiztonal lines with early television, before jumping to digital and onto HD, but why oh why is HD 1080p? Why is that the resolution we settled for on both TV and computer?

Check out sponsor AMD Ryzen Pro Processors for laptop PCs ryzen.pro/en/laptop/ ~ Aspect ratios! It's important. The world seemed to shift dramatically from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect, but the question I often ask is why? Why did we all do that? Like a bunch of zombies walking brainlessly towards the goal. It's kinda wrapped up in the swap from CRT screens to flat panel, but it's a little more intricate...

the reason early green screen looked terrible, is partly because it wasn't green screen, but blue screen, which caused the background to be overblown with blue. They switched to green screen because it's less dominant and easier to filter out

Sometimes i miss the height in 16:9 Productions. I always prefer the original Aspekt Ratio, but sometimes an old TV Series works great in 16:9 when it is transferred Frame by Frame. „Hart to Hart“ is an example where it works really well, especially outside. Inside the Villa the rooms can‘t show their potential because of the missing height and the actors taking too much Place of the screen.

did they completely skip over the fact the US systems were made for 60 Hz NTSC? Hard to tell with Peter's commentary. Even if you got a different power supply and cable, TVs that could handle NTSC input were very rare back then

I presume 37" in the UK (tube size) would be around 34"~35" in the US (viewable screen size). In that case that's a pretty close size to the 32" set that my parents had. Thus it didn't strike me as being particularly mammoth-y when I first saw it in the video. And I don't think I would've immediately noticed the difference from a 32" set (of viewable screen size) if the viewable screen size didn't reach at least 37". Because the 40" (viewable screen size) flat Trinitrion from the early-mid 2000s had most definitely left an impression on me. CRT is still my favourite display type to this day.

The Japanese were right about choosing a 2:1 ratio. Closer to full widescreen instead of the academy 16:9 compromise that was settled for. However, I really do like the fact that TV and computer displays are all finally using the same resolutions. Very convenient.

This was a fun trip down memory lane. I was in my mid 20s during this time and thoroughly enjoyed socializing in Messenger and the chat rooms. Shortly before that I had just purchased my very first computer, a Dell Dimension L550r if I remember correctly, which I wish I had kept. I would frequent the Local, Sports, and Trivia rooms. The rooms also gave me the opportunity to start meeting people in person - guy friends and female romantic partners. Very first time in my life becoming social in real life. I was a loner up to that point, only having a few guy friends and never a girlfriend. I have fond memories of this era. What a time to be alive I also thought I was so cool when I started using the boot programs on others 😅
